Computational modeling of language change

The lab is working on developing computational models that are able to mirror the types of phonological and morphological changes that take place in natural language over time. Using primarily PERL as a scripting tool for this project, the lab is investigating evolutionary analogs in language that provide an alternative explanation for linguistic and lexical patterns than the explanations offered by traditional generative theories of language. The driving force behind much of the work done in this area comes from self-organization and related work by Andy Wedel.
